Outsource and Privatization

June 23, 2012

An old friend and colleague of mine came up with a doozy of an idea about ten years ago. We were talking about prison. He made the following suggestion.

Suppose we take the real creeps that enter the criminal justice system, the cold blooded killers, rapists, child molesters, and more of that ilk and send them away. We negotiate a deal with our neighbors to the south to take these prisoners off our hands and house them in facilities just like their own.

Since we have to segregate violent offender and those who abuse women and children from the general population for their own safety and the safety of others, we should be able to get a deal that will greatly satisfy both the Mexican government and our prison officials. There is money to be had for both parties.

The results should be very positive for all concerned except for the bad guys. Let’s face it, even the toughest men in our system in the U.S. would have a difficult time in Mexico. Assuming that their prisoners are very tough too, our guys would have to behave themselves or risk the wrath of the majority. There would be no AC, no private cells, no special food, no expensive medical care and so on. The Mexican officials should be able to profit greatly, and we should be able to save money at the same time. It could be a win/win situation. Maybe we could start spending some real money trying to keep youth out of prison in the first place.

Finally, consider the deterrent in knowing that one more violent crime would get a felon transferred to Mexico in a heart beat! If it were you, would you think about that?

I’m not naive. It won’t happen.  But, we are paying private firms for security in Iraq and Afghanistan right this minute. Plus, we throw our dollars all over the earth for lots of things calling it foreign aid. Some of these obligations are over fifty years old and God only knows what we are getting for it.

I like to think that we would send child abusers, those who truly have hurt kids, over to Mexico first. Who would you send?
